Prior to Vatican II most churches covered all statues and other decor in the church with purple cloth on Passion Sunday (now palm Sunday) as a sign of mourning and penance. Also during this period the organ or piano went silent as did Mass bells which were replaced with wooden clappers. Few churches follow the tradition today after the 'Protestantization' of the Church that began with Vatican II .
