Why is the masters golf tournament called the masters?

Clifford Roberts (Augusta National club chairman) wanted to call the tournament the Masters from the beginning (1934) because the field of players was so strong. Bobby Jones (tournament and club founder) thought this title was too presumptuous and named the tournament the Augusta National Invitational Golf Tournament. However, Clifford Roberts told some of his friends in the press and the tournament was unofficially called the Masters in newspapers. Jones finally relented and in 1939 the name of the tournament was officially changed to the Masters Tournament.

WHAT IS CALCUTTA IN FISHING?

In fishing, "Calcutta" usually refers to a type of side betting or a pool system where anglers can wager on the outcome of a fishing tournament or the size of a fish caught. It's a common practice in competitive fishing events where participants, spectators, or sponsors can bid on various aspects of the tournament, such as the total weight of fish caught, the largest fish caught, or the overall winner of the competition. The Calcutta typically involves auctioning off the rights to certain outcomes before the tournament begins. Participants bid on specific boats, anglers, or teams they think will perform well in the tournament. The money collected from these bids forms a prize pool, which is then distributed among the winning bidders based on the outcomes of the tournament. The term "Calcutta" originates from the city of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), India, where this type of betting was popularized during British colonial rule. However, the practice has since spread to various fishing communities around the world.
