Ramadan is a holy month observed during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and the exact dates change from year to year. Basically its a little over 1 month of fasting, prayer, and self-sacrifice. It is a time to focus on your relationship with God. This means that Muslims cannot eat from sunrise to sunset.

When i say we cannot eat, i mean:

1)no food OF ANY KIND can enter your system

2)no drink, including water

3)no sex during fasting hours (of any kind)

Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein.... (2:185) so we better read the holy book(koran) at least once.

Muslims were ordered to fast compulsory fasting during the day and at the night Sunnah prayers.

It is also a time for focusing on cleaning up your life. You are to Abstain from using or listening to obscene words, having unclean thoughts, and going to sinful places.

Fasting is meant to teach patience and self-control to people. If you sin during fast, it means that you are not fasting in true sense. Prophet Muhammad said "If a person keeps fast and then does sin, tell him that Allah has no need for him to be thirsty or hungry". So, sin during fast destroys the fast and the person gets no reward. At other times, if you sin, it means that you are not taking the full advantage of Ramadan. So, it is pertinent that no sin takes place since this month is a month of forgiveness and you cannot have forgiveness if you continue to sin.

Muslims fast in the month of Ramadan by taking food before the fajr prayer i.e. before dawn. This practice is called taking SEHRI which has a time limit which ends with the call to Fajr prayer. we say the niyat i.e Wabe saume gadinavaitu min shahre Ramadan which means: I INTEND TO KEEP THE FAST FOR TOMORROW IN THE MONTH OF RAMADAN.

Muslims eat during the night and fast during the day which lasts for the whole month.
