You'll have a really bad seizure
Many drugs used as Migraine preventives need to be stopped very slowly and under a doctor's supervision to make sure the patient doesn't suffer adverse reactions such as seizure. Depakote is a drug that should never be stopped without instructions from your physician.
Depakote has two main uses that I know of. It is used to suppress seizures and it is also used as a mood stabilizer in people with Bipolar disorder.
One of two things could happen depending on why a person is taking this medication.
First of all, no matter what the medication is being used for and a person quits taking it suddenly, they will experience withdrawal symptoms. It is very important to taper off of Depakote!!!!!!!!!
Some of the symptoms could be life threatening if a person quits taking it suddenly! A doctor should definitely be consulted when titrating down off of a medication. Sometimes this has to be done slowly over a long period of time.
If that person is taking Depakote for seizures and doesn't replace Depakote with another anti-seizure medication, they may have seizures again.
If they are taking it as a mood stabilizerr for bipolar disorder, and Depakote is not replaced with another mood stabilizer, they will be begin to have mood swings. Depending on the specific diagnosis, they may also have psychotic episodes.
Depakote, Risperdal and lithium carbonate are medicines that work directly on brain activity. The sudden cessation of many drugs that work on brain activity can cause seizures and withdrawal and may be potentially fatal. Prescription medicine should not be changed without consulting a physician familiar with your personal history.
Don't ever stop taking any prescribed medication without talking with your doctor first; Depakote, especially, must be weaned off slowly and not all at once.

No! There is a real risk of having severe, life-threatening seizures, so it is imperative to see your doctor who will reduce the dose appropriately if needed.

My aunt who has alzheimers just started taking depakote. She already was on Paxil. Dr decreased the dose of paxil from 30mg to 20mg. She takes both paxil and the depakote in the evening.
I take both Xanax and Depakote. I have been taking Depakote for 7 months and I just started taking Xanax with it. I also take an anti-depressant. I already am noticing that the Xanax trumps it all! I think I will stop taking my Depakote and take my Xanax and anti-depressant. I never liked Depakote because I get extremely fatiqued while on it and I really do not know what the hell it is doing to me anyways. In my case I feel so bad that I do not care about addiction right now and I just want to feel normal. Xanax I feel was made for some and not others. If you experience so much anxiety that it makes you break down and cry, then I suggest Xanax. Forget what people say and if it helps that is all that matters. Depression and anxiety are nothing to mess around with. I hope this helped.
my son has been taking depakote since he was 7 years old. He just told me that his girlfriend had his baby. will the baby have problems? please give me as much information as possible we are very concern. sally
First of all, you should never crush pills and smoke them in any way. That could cause respiratory failure and Depakote is a very strong medication. I've been taking it for ten years and you CANNOT get high from taking Depakote wether you take it by mouth or however else you intend to do it.
