The Luftwaffe's main objective was to destroy the RAF (Royal Air Force) and its airfields and radar stations so that they would have air superiority for the proposed invasion of Britain. When they failed to achieve this, they started bombing towns and cities and this part of the operation was known as 'The Blitz'.
