Japan was prepared to fight until the last man was killed if the US attempted an invasion. They actually assumed an invasion would happen, since the US had slowly and methodically been invading Japanese held islands from 1943 onward. They had no idea the A-bomb even existed yet.

The Americans lost 108,504 troops in the Pacific war, with an additional 248,316 wounded or missing. If they had to invade Japan itself, those numbers would surely be doubled - AT LEAST. And that's not including the number of Japanese killed, which would have been horrendous for them. It's safe to say 90% of Japanese men would have died defending their country.

Dropping the Atomic bomb actually saved A LOT more lives than if an invasion was attempted. It was a necessary evil.
