I think what the earlier contributor was referring to is taxonomic traits. These are traits that would allowed the scientist to group the specimen into existing species categories. The scope of the question is difficult to answer w/o knowing what context this is being asked in. It is probably important to frame it around the context. Example if you are learning about vertebrates a backbone would be the first thing the specimen would be checked for.

The fossil on the bottom would be older because as time goes on rock builds up and buries fossils so the higher it is the more recent it is.
