What is 'Armageddon'?

Armmagedon refers to a great battle, the next to the last one, in which Jesus Himself will contest in, leading a host from heaven against an army of over two million which has arranged itself against Jerusalem to make a final settlement of the Jewish problelm. This army will be of all nations, kindred, tongues and people aligned in the valley of Meggido( a place where many decisive battles have been fought. However the battle of Armmagedon will not be a hand to hand conflict for the the scriptures reveal that this great army, probably the largest ever assembled for one conflict, will be destroyed without hand by the brightness of Christ's comming and the sword of his mouth. In other words, the pure righteousness of our Lord will melt living flesh releasing a torrent of blood so vast it will melt hills as it runs down and be in depth to a horses bridle for the space of six hundred furlongs. Pretty awesome, huh"

"Armageddon" is used in The Bible one time, in Revelation chapter 16:16. In that verse, we're told that Armageddon is A PLACE. THE PLACE where Satan, the "Beast" [whom modern men refer to as 'the Antichrist'] and the "False Prophet;" the Beast's miracle-working and worship-approving religious connection to the world's adoring population -- will influence all the nations of the world to gather their armies together to attempt to fight and repel the returning Jesus Christ:

"...I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs leap from the mouth of the Dragon [Satan; see Rev.12:9], the Beast, and the False Prophet. These miracle-working demons caused all the rulers of the world to gather for the battle against the LORD on that Great Judgment Day of God Almighty. 'Take note: I will come as unexpectedly as a thief! Blessed are all who are watching for Me, who keep their robes ready so they will not need to walk naked and ashamed.' And they gathered all the rulers and their armies to A PLACE called ARMAGEDDON in Hebrew." (Rev.16:13-16 NLT New Living Translation)

It's also called "Har-Meggiddo" [Mount Meggiddo or Megiddo] that sits amid a great valley, where, historically, the nations of the world have gathered their armies together throughout the centuries as a "staging area" before battle.

It's a valley where the Bible tells us a "great DECISION" will be made, when God removes man, his armies and his governments from ever ruling on the earth again, prior to Christ's establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth.

"Say to the nations far and wide: 'GET READY FOR WAR! Call out your best warriors! Let your fighting men advance for the attack! Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Train even your weaklings to be warriors. And now, O LORD, CALL OUT YOUR WARRIORS!

"Let the nations be called to arms [a prophetic call to the PLACE called ARMAGEDDON]. Let them march to the VALLEY OF JEHOSHAPHAT [another name for the PLACE called Armageddon]. There I, the LORD, will sit to pronounce Judgment on them all. Now let the sickle do its work, for the harvest is ripe... Thousands upon thousands are waiting in the VALLEY OF DECISION. It is THERE that the Day of the LORD will soon arrive. The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will no longer shine." (Joel 3:12-15 NLT)

The prophecies of the "Day of the LORD" [when Jesus Christ returns] will be preceded by the darkening of the sun and moon... a great disturbance in the heavens... and a great shaking of heaven and earth. This will be the "time" of the gathering of the world's military forces to the PLACE called Armageddon. To the "Valley of Decision."

"Immediately after those horrible days [the Great Tribulation] end, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. AND THEN at last, the sign of the coming of the Son of Man will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the nations of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds of heaven with Power and Great Glory." (Matt.24:29-30 NLT)

That's when the three evil spirits will gather all the nations to the PLACE called Armageddon. The PLACE where Jesus Christ and His angelic army will "decide" who will rule on the earth... beginning with the utter destruction of man's ability to make war.

"On His robe and thigh was written this title: King of kings and LORD of lords. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, shouting to the vultures flying high in the sky: 'Come! Gather together for the great banquet God has prepared. Come and EAT THE FLESH of kings, captains, and strong warriors; of horses and their riders; and of all humanity, both free and slave, small and great.' Then I SAW THE BEAST GATHERING THE KINGS OF THE EARTH AND THEIR ARMIES [at the PLACE called Armageddon; see Rev.16:13-16] in order to fight against the One sitting on the horse and His army..." (Rev.19:16:19 NLT).

That's what "Armageddon" is. It's a PLACE where the future rulership of the earth will be "decided" by the overwhelming All-Powerful and Glorious return of Jesus Christ.

Armageddon is a corruption of Megiddo, a coastal city at the north of Israel, where a terrible battle was fought. We can see a later reference to this battle in Zechariah 12:11: "In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon." There is also an apocalyptic reference to Armageddon in Revelation 16:16: "And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon."

Dispensationalists believe there will be a final battle "of Armageddon," after which Jesus will set up a millennial kingdom from the throne of David in Jerusalem, and will reign for one thousand years. Armageddon is also very important in Jehovah's Witness theology and was originally prophesied to occur in 1914, but was revised to 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, then finally to 1975.
