The tale is divided into six books, though it is often published as a trilogy comprised of the 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'.

Lord of the Rings was published in 1954-5 in these installments, due to paper shortages after the second world war. The book had taken Tolkien most of his life to write, and encompasses much of his love of ancient literature and language, especially Anglo-Saxon and Viking legends. Tolkien is reputed to have felt that England lacked Legends of the caliber he would have liked, and so felt this void needed to be filled.

Lord of the Rings was made into a three-part film series by New Line Cinema and director Peter Jackson and released annually from Decembers 2001-2003. The final film, Return of the King, received a record amount of awards including eleven Oscars.
