The story is told that the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda [c. 1466-1515] gave the name of Oro Hubo ['gold there'] to the island of Aruba in 1499. Another story is that Aruba comes from the Arawak Indian word Oibubai ['guide']. Another name, Ora Oubao['shell island'], is attributed to Carib Indians
