∙ 13y agoWe don't actually know. Traditionally, the Iliad is considered to have been the first, followed up by The Odyssey, and both of them written by Homer somewhere in the 8th century BC.
It's actually much more complicated: the so-called 'Homeric question' (don't know if this is the correct translation, I'm a Dutch-speaking Belgian) handles about who might have been Homer, where and when he lived etc. Some think there's never been 1 Homer, but just a group of singers who made these poems. Others think the Iliad and Odyssey are the first written redaction of an oral tradition of epic poems. Some think Homer has lived indeed, but the question arises when: opinions differ from 1200BC to 700BC.
