My favorite book! A young man, Nicholas, is left peniless by his improvident father and is forced to work at a terrible school for money. He meets a poor, damaged fellow named Smike and runs away with him to seek their fortunes. Meanwhile, his sister Kate has been asked to entertain a bunch of barbaric "gentlemen" and is assaulted by Sir Mulberry Hawk. I hope this wasn't for a book report. If so, you are a scumbag. Otherwise, it is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it. Merry Christamas!

Dickens would not have had a purpose to create a ghost that did not speak in a Christmas carol. His story was based on the ghost of Christmas past, and therefore needed to speak in Christmas carols and hymns.
Charles Dickens aimed to bring awareness to social injustices and inequalities prevalent in Victorian England, reflecting the struggles of the lower classes. Through his works, he sought to advocate for reform and highlight the harsh realities faced by the poor and underprivileged in society. Ultimately, Dickens' purpose was to provoke empathy and inspire change through his vivid portrayals of characters and settings.
In "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens, round characters are those that exhibit complex personalities and undergo development throughout the story, such as Pip and Estella. Flat characters, on the other hand, are those that remain relatively unchanged and serve a specific purpose in the plot, like Joe Gargery and Miss Havisham.
In "Hard Times," Charles Dickens includes the character of Sissy Jupe to provide a contrast to the utilitarian views espoused by characters like Mr. Gradgrind. Through Sissy's warmth, empathy, and emotional intelligence, Dickens highlights the importance of love, compassion, and imagination in a rigid, industrialized society. Sissy embodies qualities that are undervalued in the utilitarian world, ultimately serving as a critique of the dehumanizing effects of pure rationalism and utilitarianism.
Sissy in Hard Times represents imagination, emotion, and humanity in contrast to the utilitarian philosophy of facts and reason that dominates the society in the novel. Charles Dickens uses Sissy to highlight the importance of compassion, kindness, and a more well-rounded approach to life that considers both practicality and emotional intelligence. Through Sissy, Dickens critiques the dehumanizing effects of industrialization and the obsession with efficiency at the expense of human connection.
His clothes would have been given to the hangman, as a sort of gratuity. His body would have been given to a medical school, for the purpose of autopsy and education.
The actual birthday of Saint Nicholas is unknown. We celebrate his birth into Heaven on December 6 each year.

Charles Dickens likely presented the spirits in time order in "A Christmas Carol" to show Scrooge the progression and impact of his past, present, and future actions. By leading Scrooge through his life in this structured way, Dickens emphasized the importance of reflecting on one's choices and their long-term consequences. This approach also allowed Scrooge to witness the growth and change that can occur over time, encouraging him to make positive changes in the present.
