Salsa is a fusion of Caribbean and Latin American rhythms developed in a particular style by Puertorican and Cuban musicians that lived in New York City during the 60's and 70's.
"Salsa" is the Spanish word for sauce, thus the name indicates the flavor and spiciness of the music.
Salsa is categorized in three genres: Salsa Gorda, on which the harder edged rhythms of the golden age of the salsa movement during the 1960's-70's are used. Some examples of this genre are: El Gran Combo and Hector Lavoe. Salsa Monga, a more commercialized and "watered down" form of salsa. Examples of this genre are: Marc Anthony and Victor Manuelle. And Salsa Erotica which was a short lived movement that consisted on songs with sexually explicit lyrics. Two examples of performers of salsa erotica are: Frankie Ruiz and Lalo Rodriguez.
