ROMAN Catholic is the rite through which one celebrates their Catholic faith. The "Roman" Rite is the most prominent one and is the one most identified as Catholic, however there are many "Catholic" rites. Ukranian, Greek, Malakite, Marianite, etc. They may or may not be in communion with Rome, but they are catholic. The word catholic comes from the Greek and denotes a universality of belief across the Christian World. Not all churches fall under the category of being Catholic. Evangelical Christian Churches would be in this category. A good example of a 'catholic' belief, is " One Baptism for all". As long as the formulary is in "The name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit", that baptism would be accepted by all the mainline christian churches. This is a fine example of what it means to be catholic without being ROMAN CATHOLIC.

Catholic AnswerRoman Catholic started out in Medieval times, but did not really come into popular use until after the protestant revolt in England where it was a not quite nice reference to the Catholic Church. As it refers to the whole Catholic Church (because of the Vicar of Christ has resided in Rome since the time of St. Peter), it does NOT refer to the Latin Rite, a common misperception as noted in the answer above. Roman Catholic encompasses all rites including the Latin, Ukranian, Greek, etc. It is never used in official documents of the Catholic Church but is still used by non-Catholics or Orthodox Catholic to refer to the Church in union with the Holy Father. In other words "Roman" Catholic is just slang phrase to refer to the Catholic Church, and is used especially by those whom style themselves catholic with a small "c" to say that they believe everything BUT the papacy, in other words, are protestant or Orthodox.Perhaps an Italian Catholic who lives in Rome? I never heard the term "Catholic Roman" before.
