Although today we look back and enjoy TR's accomplishments and recognize that they were necessary and good, many of TR's ideas were not terribly popular in his time, particularly among other politicians. TR attacked corruption and cronyism in his career in the New York State Assembly, which, although popular among his voters, was not popular among established politicians. Because of his popularity with the voters, Republicans had no choice but to eventually offer him chance to run on the ticket for the Vice Presidency even though the Party establishment was not particularly thrilled with the prospect of him being one heartbeat away from the Presidency. As it turned out, McKinley was assassinated and TR became President in 1901. TR was surprisingly scandal-free in his political career, but for one episode. The only mark on his record is his handling of the Brownsville Affair (late 1907-1908), an event where members of a black military unit, the 25th Infantry, were accused of going on a shooting spree in Brownsville, Texas that left one civilian dead. As it turned out, the allegations were false and racially-motivated. But before that information surfaced, Roosevelt, a military man, acted quickly to dishonorably discharge all 167 men in the unit. Too stubborn to go back on his original decision when it came to light that the allegations were false, Roosevelt allowed the men who could prove that they were not involved in the shootings (which was nearly impossible to prove) to be dishonorably discharged. Ten soldiers were granted honorable discharges in 1910 (after TR left office). The rest were not honorably discharged until 1972 by President Nixon's order, at which time the sole surviving member of the 25th was paid reparations of $25,000. TR was cleared of any wrongdoing in his handling of the case by the Senate Committee on Military Affairs in March, 1908.
