An incubator is a device used to maintain and grow microbiological cultures and cell cultures. They are also used in helping grow chickens and other poultry in place of hens. They are boxes that maintain heat, humidity, and other conditions.

Incubators are designed to supply all of the necessary environmental factors needed to grow bacteria or cells.

If doctors needed to identify a particular bacterial infection, and which antibiotics the bacteria would be susceptible to, they would:

1- take a sample of bacteria from their patient's wound

2- place it on a Petri dish with appropriate nutrients

3- place dish in an incubator (keeps dish at 37'C, adds oxygen &/or CO2)

4- after bacteria grow, they can drop various antibiotics in different parts of the bacterial colony

5- they would use the antibiotic that best inhibited the bacterial growth in their patient
