Knights in the Middle Ages were first and foremost soldiers on horseback. They usually served the great Lords of the kingdom and practiced the skills necessary to be useful to their Lord in battle. They were to practice the virtue of chivalry by their care for those weaker than themselves, especially to ladies. They were to be loyal, trustworthy and steadfast in carrying out their assigned duties.
Primary role of the knight was to be a mounted warrior because that was the knight's origins. They were meant to obey the the Code of Chivalry, but usually didn't. The code of Chivalry was that knights had to be merciful to defeated knights but also harsh if not brutal to evil doers, they needed to protect the poor and be courteous to noble ladies. They wore symbolic colors on their uniforms- red for blood and white for purity. They were classed 4th from the top of the feudal system behind nobles, the King and then the Pope. Knights granted land to the serfs in return for food, money (taxes) and services. There was two different types of Chivalry- Catholic and Secular. Catholic Chivalry sought to reduce the amount of blood shed by the knight pledging himself to a pope whilst secular chivalry focused on the mounted soldier who pledged himself to a king. Knights needed to/ could ransack other (enemies) villages, guard the Kings castle, be the lords "bodyguard" and could participate in administering justice. The Crusadesincreased the value of the church in knights lives.
