A peristaltic contraction is controlled by the autonomic nervous system and is the contraction of smooth muscle in the digestive system to create a wave-like motion, allowing food and digested materials to be transported through the digestive system. This process is called peristalsis. It is mostly controlled by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Peristalsis is a muscular contraction that travels along the alimentary canal, squeezing food (in various degrees of partial digestion) in front of it. Without peristalsis, food and partially digested food would just remain wherever it was, rather than moving through the entire alimentary canal.

What is peristaltic movement?

Peristaltic movement is a series of waves of contraction and expansion that causes forward movement. It applies to the peculiar wormlike wave motion of the intestines and other similar structures, produced by the successive contraction of the muscular fibers of their walls, forcing their contents onwards. The word derives from Greek and Latin meaning 'to press together'.

What is the rhymic contraction of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract called?

The rhythmic contractions of tubular organs, such as the esophagus or intestine, are called peristaltic waves. These waves propel the food material forwards. They are automatic due to local nerve plexus. The peristaltic waves increase in rhythm and force due to stimulation by the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system, and decrease due to stimulation by the sympathetic autonomic nervous system.
