There are a couple of flowers that immediately come to mind. Rhododendrons have large flowers that can come in shades of red. Peonies also have red varieties. Rhododendrons grow on shrubs with woody branches. Peonies are bushy plants that can grow a couple of feet high. Their foliage begins to slowly die back shortly after the blooms have died.
