EMP stands for Electromagnetic Pulse. Its a single burst of electromagnetic energy. It can be used to shut down electronic devices, usually for a short period of time. Its power depends on the size of the capacitor, type of wire, environmental conditions and many other things.

The effects are lasting only if the pulse is strong enough to completely overload the electronics, otherwise know as "frying" them. If done on infrastructure electronics, such as power line Transformers or the actual energy generator, the results can be devastating.

Massive blasts are almost always caused by a nuclear bomb, however a device can be built to generate the pulse on its own, usually with a much smaller effective radius and power.
