Anxiety disorders are medically recognised problems with fear and anxiety. Typical examples include Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder. Generally with anxiety disorders the sufferer is stuck in a loop where the ways in which they attempt to cope with their fears keeps them fearful. The most notable coping strategy is avoidance. Anxiety disorders are also typically associated negative thoughts.

One belief amongst the general public and some professionals is that anxiety disorders are called by a chemical imbalance in brain chemistry, more specifically regarding the neuro-transmitter serotonin. Evidence for this comes from variations in brain scans between control subjects and people with an anxiety disorder, and from the fact that taking medications that alter serotonin levels can help relieve these disorders. However, this evidence does not well supported for the hypothesis of neuro-transmitter dysfunction as pure psychological interventions which do not directly alter brain chemistry have high success rates. Therefore, medication use for anxiety can be more seen as something that creates an artificial state of well-being rather than correcting an underlying problem.

Typcial treatments for anxiety disorders are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy including Graded Exposure, and medications. SSRI medications are usually the first to be tried.
