complimentary colors are colors opposite each other on the color wheel like red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and purple
No, complimentary colors are across from each other on the color wheel.
It does not matter how much red (a primary colour) and green (a secondary colour) you mix together, you will always get some variation of brown or grey. Yellow is a primary colour, that means you can not mix to get it. You can't do it. Yellow is a primay color which means that you can't mix colors to get yellow. Red is also a primary color and green is the complimentary color of red. When you mix these two colors you will get a strange shade of brown...but no yellow. Sorry.
Complimentary colours are the opposite colours to the primary colours, these colours are created by mixing two primary colours together. For example, green is an opposite to red and is made by mixing blue and yellow. Purple is opposite to yellow and is made by mixing red and blue. And finally orange is opposite to blue and is made by mixing yellow and red together.

Intermediate colors are made when primary colors and secondary colors mix together. All of the intermediate colors are: Red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet(blue-purple), red-violet(red-purple).
Complimentary colors are the opposites on the color wheel. For instance, green and red are complimentary colors. Blue and orange are complimentary. See the link for the color wheel and color illustrations of this principle.
