The word bargain comes from the word "bargaining", which means to negotiate the terms of the exchange. Therefore, in its literal sense, bargain shopping denotes shopping through negotiating. Think of garage sales or flea markets where the seller is usually flexible in price and willing to negotiate.
But most of us think of bargain shopping as shopping to "land a great deal". Think of outlet stores where the prices are expected to be lower than normal or the average store sale where the shopper can buy a product marked down and walk away feeling that they got a real bargain.
