Blu-ray will give better quality but these are much more expensive. Most DVD players however give quality for good price. It really depends on much you want to spend.
A DVD player is a better decision than a BluRay player based on price alone. This type of player is cheaper. A BluRay player may be a better idea because it can also play DVDs and has more advanced features.

As the two systems are in-compatible, don't trash your HD DVD player just yet. It will still do a do job of playing the HD DVD discs you still have.
