What is difference between Ionic and covolent Bond?

The difference is the degree to which the atoms forming the bond share their electrons.

In an ionic bond - say, between the sodium and chlorine atoms in table salt - the chlorine atom completely dominates the interaction, taking one electron from the sodium atom. This makes the chlorine atom a negatively charged ion and the sodium atom a positively charged ion. The bond between them is primarily due to the electromagnetic attraction between these positively and negatively charged ions - hence the name "ionic bond".

In a covalent bond - say, between the carbon and oxygen atoms in carbon monoxide - the electrons are shared much more evenly between the two atoms. True, the bonding electrons are more attracted to the oxygen atom because it has more protons in its nucleus than the carbon atom, but not to the same degree as in an ionic bond. The covalent bond between the atoms is primarily due to the stabilization that both atoms experience from this more or less even sharing of electrons.

If this difference is under 2 the bond is covalent; if the difference is over 2 the bond is ionic.

What is the difference between ionic bond and covalent bond?

Ionic bond: involve an electrostatic attraction between atoms.Covalent bond: electrons are shared between atoms.

What type of bond is between Metals with nonmetals of differing electronegativities?

If the difference in electronegativity between the metal and the non metal is above 1.7, then ionic bond is formed. If the difference in electronegativity between the metal and the non metal is below 1.7, then polar covalent bond is formed.

MgCl2 is an ionic compound. there is a large difference in electronegativity between Mg and Cl.

Ionic bond is the bond between anion and cation whereas metallic bond is the come between the molecules of the metal atom

What is the primary difference between a ionic and covalent bond?

In an ionic bond electrons are transferred and the bond is due to electrostatic attrcation between oppositely charged ions. in a covalent bond the electrons are shared .

Ionic bond, as the difference in electronegativity between calcium and fluorine is over 1.7

What is a rule for predicting whether or not a bond will be ionic?

If the difference in electronegativity between the elements is greater than 2 then the bond will be ionic, if its between 1.6 and 2 then it will be ionic if one of the elements is a metal.

Because the difference in their electronegativity is not sufficiently large.See the Related Questions to the left for the difference between a covalent and an ionic bond.
