What is elfen lied about?

Elfen Lied is a very gory, sadistic, and sexual anime/manga that that was made by Lynn Okamoto.

It focuses on the much deeper animal instincts of the human mind. The basic story is; A new branch of the human race has been created and the old humans are now conducting in-humane experiments on them and plan to erase the species like they were from another planet. The new race is called the " Diclonius". The anatomy of a Diclonius is very much like a regular human except for two horns on their heads that look more like cat ears. Other than the "Horns" the defining characteristic of a Diclonius is a special ability. This ability is called a Vector. It is a set of invisible arms ranging from two to twelve meters in length, they can tear basically rip anything apart(including other humans). The main character, Lucy, is a mentally unstable 18 year old girl inside a maximum security facility. She escapes this facility, but not without a couple injuries. After tearing through many guards she is injured by a 50. cal gunshot that ricocheted off her protective helmet causing her to develop a split personality. The other personality's name is Nyuu. That is about the first episode/chapter.

Elfen Lied is about a mutant species similar to humans in build but distinguishable by two horns on their head and "vectors", transparent telekinetic-ally controlled arms that have the power to manipulate and cut objects within their reach. The series is centered around the teenage Diclonius girl "Lucy" who was rejected by humans and subsequently wreaks a murderous vengeance upon them.

In the 1st Episode

Diclonius are being held in a special experimental facility off the coast of Kamakura in Kanagawa, south of the city of Yokohama, by the chief executive of the experimental facility. A teenage girl named by the staff as "Lucy," escapes, using her vectors to deflect gunfire and effortlessly kill security guards. As she makes her way out of the facility, a sniper shoots her, breaking her metal helmet and causing her to fall into the sea. The next morning, Kohta is moving to Kamakura to study in a university where he is reunited with his cousin Yuka. He encounters Lucy on a beach in the area, naked with her head bleeding from the bullet wound and only capable of saying the word "Nyu." Kohta and Yuka decide to take her with them, naming her "Nyu" as a result.

Now Lucy has got two personality's a cute, bubbly girl, and a cold hearted killer. Through out the series she meets new friends and makes new enemies

But warning: The anime series contains Nudity, Violence and LOTS of gore

The "Elfenlied" giving the manga "Elfen Lied" its title is a german poem by Eduard Mörike (see https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Elfenlied). This poem has been adapted into a song, which (in the manga) is sung by Nozomi, a friend of Yuka, who joins the Kaede guest house to practice singing. Neither Nozomi nor the song are mentioned in the anime.
