A gateway, specifically an internet gateway is a device that relays communication traffic to the internet. With IoT (Internet of Things), many devices, such as light switch, thermostat, motion detectors and door locks have the ability to communicate their status, (on, off, closed, open, dim) to a controller and allow for status updates and remote control. The gateway provides the link for those devices to be controlled and monitored anywhere on the planet via the interent. ∙ 14y agoTypically a gateway connection allows a client to connect to the outside world, outside of their LAN. It may be marked as a default gateway, but doesn't have to be. The default gateway is the location to send all packets that need to be routed outside of the current local area connection.
An internet connection may be the default gateway, or it may be a router further down the chain of routing in a more complex network.
