The Bahamas are a coral archipelago of 700 islands and 2400 uninhabited cays
Just like with the USA, Columbus discovered the islands in 1492. But they were not settled until the 17th century by British and Bermudan religious refugees and so the islands became a British Crown Colony in 1717. But the Spanish took control in 1782until the Treaty of Versailles in 1783 restored the islands to the British and the islands of retained their British character ever since. So they remained a British Crown Colony until granted independence on July 10th 1973 remaining within the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II remains Head of State and as in most Commonwealth countries She is represented by a Governor-General with a bicameral parliament elected by the Bahamian people.
