Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is an important industrial chemical. It is often converted t sodium or potassium cyanide for storage and transportation. It is used for:

  • In the mining industry to dissolve metals out of ore
  • In the plating industry asa solven tfor the metals to be plated
  • As a building bock in the production of organic chemicals like methyl methacrylate, EDTA and Nylon 66 precursors

Aside: It is a valuable plot device in murder mysteries as it is very toxic at low levels

There are a few different commercial uses for hydrogen sulfide but the most common usage is for the production of sulphur. It has also been used for analysis of metal ions.
