A jousting tournament was an activity that was done by knights back in the middle ages. Every so often, the king and queen of wherever they were would host a series of events during a festival not only for the viewer's entertainment, but also to help the knights to keep in shape and to test their strength so they would be more prepared for battle. As in my encyclopedia: 'TOURNAMENTS and JOUSTING' "Tournaments began in France in the middle of the 11th century as peacetime training exercises for knights. They soon developed into major events with elaborate rules. Big groups of knights fought fierce mock battles over large areas of land, and losing side paid ransom or lost possessions. In the 13th century, tournaments became more organized and took place in a single field. Here, just two knights jousted, or fought with blunt weapons. Later, tilting replaced jousting. The knights used lances to knock their rivals to the ground in order to win." "Even though lances used in jousting and tilting had blunt tips, a fall from horseback (which meant defeat) often injured the knight." The term 'joust' as in my dictionary: 1-joust- 1a: to fight on horseback as a knight or man-at-arms. 1b: to engage in combat with lances on horseback. 2: to engage in personal combat or competition. 2-joust- 1a: a combat on horseback between two knights with lances especially as part of a tournament. 1b: tournament. 2: a personal combat or competition; struggle.
Jousting was a form of Martial Arts contest between mounted knights. The weapons were lances and whatever other weapons might have been agreed upon, including axes, maces, swords, and daggers. The contest started with each knight trying to unseat the other with a lance. If the lances broke or if both knights were unseated, the combat could continue of foot.
