Fossil fuel refers to combustible hydrocarbon deposits that derive from ancient, once-living matter of a previous geologic time and used for fuel, i. e. petroleum, coal, or natural gas.

Burning fossil fuels leads to the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) that has not been in the atmosphere in a very long time, which along with other greehouse gases can lead to global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps.

Fossil fuels differ from "renewable fuels," in that renewable fuels derive from plants that recently lived, and recently removed the CO2 their combustion releases from the atmosphere. Encouraging the growth of renewable fuel sources, food plants, even forests is one of Nature's methods of accomplishing "carbon sequestration."

"A long time ago, remnants of plants and animals buried into the earth. Due to the tremendous pressure of the earth above and the heat inside they were converted into fuels. These fuels are called fossil fuels." [Quoted from attached link]

A fossil is a remnant of an organism from the past that has been preserved through some form of petrification (being turned into stone). For example, a fossil bone was originally a bone, that later became replaced by other minerals in exactly the same shape as the original bone. Thus, a fossil lasts much longer than the remains, but we can still learn a great deal about the organism the remains belonged to. Fossilization is the process of an organism's remains being transformed into a fossil.
