The Great War is what World War 1 (1914-1918) was referred to before World War 2 began and it was renamed. It wasn't great because it was good fun ! Far from it, it was because of the number of countries in it and affected by it. I am just reading up on it and the complexity of the alliances and national alleigances are quite remarkable. The problems of the Balkan countries, in what became Yugoslavia, from Serbia & Croatia & so on are baffling in the extreme. As is the relationship of the 3 principal Allies, Britain , France & Russia. Looking back now it just looks like a very long war that the Allies were always going to win at some point or other, it was just a matter of time..... No, it wasnt quite like that at all.
Another name for the Great War is World War I.
