How will electric cars help the environment? They are 0 emissions, which keeps the air cleaner and cuts pollution. They cut oil dependency and save money. How are electric cars bad? They need electricity. And coal is still the most popular form of energy. Coal creates emissions. The batteries in the cars can also be toxic, and the whole process of mining for the elements and material to create the batteries would probably be more harmful for the environment than buying a normal car.

Electric cars normally get their energy from the electrical grid, which is primarily supplied by coal-burning generating plants. Building more coal fired plants to meet the demand for electricity would be bad for the environment. However, they are better for the environment than internal combustion engine cars burning gasoline, as some electricity is renewably generated (wind, solar, hydro, etc).
