Seriously speaking, philosophy is the basis of all knowledge, because it teaches critical and creative thinking. Allcontemporary disciplines grew out of philosophy. Some, like psychology*, only within the last hundred or so years.

*'Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint' was a book by the philosopher Brentano that formed the basis of Meyer's initial experiments and heralded the birth of scientific psychology. It was written at the turn of the 20th century.

Answer

Philosophy, as I understand it, is the study, among other things, of the nature of existence.

It attempts to answer the purpose of life and of existence itself ... to answer questions about life and of man's relationship to all that is around him ... and even to answer questions about the nature and existence or reality of God.

It is an attempt to apply logic to problems such as the nature of man, the discovery of his essence, to explain his behaviour, the nature of presence and to the understand the world about him. It examines reason, knowledge, values and being, using contemplation and rational argument.

Its Greek derivative means, "the love of wisdom" .
