Obama has decided to sacrifice the amazon rainforest, but for a good/bad reason. Brazil has decided to grow greener fuel, and needs space to do it. they have decided to cut down the amazon rainforest to do it, and they have president obama's endorsement.
I just hate to see ANY tree being cut down. The statistics these days are very good in that regard, though. Mainly when trees are cut down, there are other trees planted in their place after some time has gone by for the land to get right for planting. These new trees grow in about 25 years, then those are cut down. They have a great system now. There used to be laws (may still be, I am not sure) that make it illegal to cut down certain types of trees, for instance, walnut trees. The pioneers back in the 1700s and 1800s did more damage in the way of destroying irreplaceable trees than we have done in the 1900s. They used the hard, solid, long-lasting trees such as the walnut to make their homes and furniture, while depleting nearly all of them. Also, lumberjacks now take down the trees that are weak, or structurally unsound trees first. Check out websites in regard to deforestation and protecting our trees. There are millions of acres in the US that are now protected. www.epa.gov
