Religious people believe that secular Biblical Criticism often makes efforts to assign a late date for as many books as possible in the Hebrew Bible. Whether or not this is done sincerely, it has the effect of minimizing the reliability of these books. For example, if Genesis had been written by postulated authors from the JEPD hypothesis, it would mean that Genesis' traditional date is wrong, that its writers were to us anonymous and not Moses, and (likely, or possibly) that it was not written through prophecy at God's dictation. Instead of being known as perfectly accurate and godly, it might be seen as not much different than any other ancient non-Hebrew text. This, to the believer, is a grievous error.
Interestingly, it was once theorized that writing didn't exist in Moses' time. Then, based upon archaeological proofs, scholars were compelled to retract that theory.
If the Book of Genesis had been written by Moses or at least by someone during the Exodus, then at least some of the story could be assumed to be literally true, although the majority of the greatest epics would still be hearsay or perhaps inspired by God.
If the Book of Genesis was written during the first millennium BCE, then the book can no longer be treated as the undisputed word of God, but must be judged on its merits.
I believe it would be inappropriate to insist on the early date merely to fortify any evidence for the truth of The Bible, unless this is consistent with the facts - just as I believe it would be inappropriate to insist on a late date for other reasons. The book should be judged honestly and on the facts available to us. If God exists and there is some truth in the Bible, that will continue to be the case even if we accept the later date favoured by biblical scholars.
