Static electricity is the term used for very slow moving or stationary (static) electric charges. The sudden arcing movement of these charges, or sparking, is what ignites (sparks) the gasoline/air mixture that propels our automobiles. The same principle is involved when we walk across a nylon rug and touch a door knob, getting a shock. Lightning gives us the most impressive example of static electrical discharge, and occasionally, shock.

What is 'static electricity' mean?

Static elecricity is when two things rub together, and one of the materials picks up negatively charged electrons- making the item that has picked up elecrons negative, and the other one positive. This charge does not move easily, or through wires etc, hence the name static (meaning it does not move)
