They are basically place of worship for Jews. The word temple is used more by the Reform Jews, whereas a Synagogue is the traditional Orthodox name for it.

In Hebrew, the word used is "Beit Knesset" which literally means place of gathering.

The word Temple is also used to describe the Holy Temple that once stood in Jerusalem that was destroyed by the Romans in the year 70.
