All celebrities and political candidates want to be in the limelight, and to make sure the public remembers them, they need to get "television exposure." This refers to having a TV station or network do a story about you and give you some positive publicity. (The hope is that it won't just be one story, but rather, many stories as time passes.) Getting television exposure is something every up-and-coming entertainer also hopes for-- performing on a show like "American Idol," even if you don't win, still exposes you to millions of people who might never have heard of you before.
Our world is dominated by mass media, whether it's TV, radio, newspaper, YouTube, Facebook, etc. With so many people competing for attention, it is often difficult to get enough exposure, especially on television. Some celebrities and candidates hire professional publicists to get them on TV, while others just keep trying to get the exposure on their own.
