The Aegis system is a computerized battle management system installed on most US Navy destroyers (the Arleigh Burke class) and all cruisers. It was specifically designed to manage the very complex air-sea battle expected to occur between US Navy ships and aircraft vs Soviet aircraft utilizing air-to-surface missiles.
It is capable of linking a variety of ships' weapon systems together as a single unit, and firing and guiding over 100 missiles to different targets simultaneously. It can be thought of as the ultimate in an anti-aircraft/missile defense system.
Unfortunately, it has drawbacks, the biggest one is that it was designed for use in open water, away from land. It was also not originally designed to take into account nearby civilian aircraft.
Aegis was the Greek word for "shield". The AEGIS system is a system that is designed to shield the ship.
