According to the narrative in the Torah, the Egyptians never acknowledged the Hebrew God, so they would not have had a name for God. In fact, at the time of the slavery in Egypt, the story says that the Hebrews didn't even know the name of God.

There is only one Hebrew God.

The one God has many names. They are not allowed to be erased when written in Hebrew.

The true name of God cannot be pronounced, and in fact, the pronunciation is not even known. When Jews read the name of God, they substitute other names, particularly Adonai or Hashem.

In addition to the one true name of God, here are some other Hebrew words for God:

  • Adonai
  • Elohim
  • Makom
  • Hakadosh Baruch hu
  • El
  • Eloha
  • Hashem
  • Adoshem
  • Shechina
