There are two primary symbols, very closely related. The Scales of Judgment and the Feather of Ma'at. Ma'at is the goddess of truth, justice and righteousness.
As the belief goes, when a person dies, they are led into the Hall of Judgment to stand before the god Osiris and a council of 42 Assessors. The person's heart is then weighed on the Scales against the Feather of Ma'at. Should their heart be lighter than the feather, it means that they are a good and honest person who lived a good life and they are then allowed to enter into the afterlife. If their heart is heavier than the feather, they do not earn a place in the afterlife and their heart is consumed by a terrible monster who sits near the scales waiting for a snack.
The feather of Ma'at.
Ma'at is an Egyptian goddess. She is goddess of truth, balance and order. She was like the symbol of justice, as the feather she wears in her hair is used in the afterlife judgement. So I guess you could say she was famous in ancient Egyptian times.
