The life span of a commercial layer hen belonging to an egg company is usually about two years as they are culled at about 2-3 years, once production peaks and begins to decline.

Free ranging hens kept on a farm, safe from predators, may live as long as 12-15 years, long after they have ceased laying eggs.

I have rescued battery hens among my flock and they often reach ages upward of six to eight years old. They are not always in the best of condition when they first arrive here but proper nutrition and care will extend their lives quite well. After the first molt and the new feathers come in they are quite indistinguishable from hens born here at the free range farm.

Given extra care and attention an ex battery hen can live for many years after rescue. It depends on the condition of the bird rescued and the breed. Of course, the bird will eventually stop laying eggs after about 2 years of age and either become a pet or a meat hen.
