SWOT analysis is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies
SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, where Strengths and Weaknesses relate to a company's internal issues and Opportunities and Threats to a company's external environment. This analysis is usually a part of a good business plan and it allows to evaluate the competitiveness of a given company in a given market.
A study undertaken by an organization to identify its internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as its external opportunities and threats.

SWOT is a shortcut version of a basic feasibility analysis to typically save a venture capitalist's time when reading through hundreds of ideas/businesses. It stands for Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities & Threats. It is meant to provide a snapshot of the "playing field" for the deal which is then used to help determine superficial feasibility of the idea in a relatively quick manner. I use it for our 1st level due diligence to determine if an idea warrants any further time. It is NOT used in and of itself to decide to go forward with an idea or not. Think of it like a battlefield. What weapons do we have (Strengths), how can we be killed (weaknesses), who can we kill (opportunities), who can kill us (threats)?
