Named for the masses of seaweed that accumulate there, the Sargasso Sea is a large area of the central North Atlantic Ocean where there are relatively calm seas for extended periods of time. It is mainly in the so-called "horse latitudes" and like the doldrums, this area meant trouble for sailing ships that could only proceed under wind power.

The Sargasso Sea extends roughly east and southeast from Bermuda, being to the east of the Gulf Stream that flows along the east coast of the US.
