Julius Caeser was a famous military general who conquered Gaul (France) after this the senate demanded he return to Rome and relinquish his command in Gaul. He led his army into Rome with his new allies (Lepidus and Marc Antony) and took control. Lepidus retired shortly after and Antony and Caeser separated Rome. Antony took the East and Caeser took the West with Rome. The Roman senate, led by Brutus thought that Caeser had to much power and they killed him. His step-son, Octavion (Augustus) went to take the throne of Rome and after a civil war with Antony (leaving Antony dead) he reunited the empire and ruled as the first emperor.
I can only give you an opinion, but I think it signifies that the Roman Republic was ripe for a single and efficient leader. Julius Caesar refused the title of king, but he had more power than the original Roman kings ever dreamed of having.
Julius Caesar was apart of the "first triumvirate" made up of three men: Pompey, Caesar, and Crassus. Caesar tried to deify himself he was a dictator near a god. Caesar was assassinated in 44 BCE because he went against the senate. After Caesar the Great died every emperor past he was called Caesar "their name". Caesar's great nephew Octavian later known as Caesar Augustus became literally the patron of Rome.
In his own time, the main thing that Julius Caesar did was add the territory of Gaul to the empire and pioneered the takeover of Britain. Of course he did more militarily, but Gaul was the most significant of his conquest. In our time his reform of the calendar is perhaps the most significant of his accomplishments as it has affected history for close to 2000 years.
