Although many different interpretations are put on the story of Noah's Ark it is clear from the writing itself that it is intended to be a historical narrative of an actual historical event. There are a number of references to specific time 'anchors' such as how old Noah was at the various stages of events. The events are also told with little embellishment or exaggeration (which is indeed difficult, given the magnitude of the events recorded), which is a standard hallmark of myths or legends, some of which have arisen from other attempts to re-write the flood record from a different perspective.

It is also clear from references made to Noah elsewhere in The Bible, that it is regarded as a specific historical event.

Further to this, the geologic record has abundant evidence of the 'mabul', the specific Hebrew word for this flood (as distinct from other smaller local floods, though themselves destructive). The geologic record thus points back to the clear intention of the author of the original Hebrew account, which was to give a historic narrative of this actual event.

The account of Noah's Ark, since it has a theme of divine judgment, is also regarded as a 'type' or 'figure' or 'picture' of the coming judgment by fire spoken of in a number of places in the New Testament. The obvious point here is that just as the coming judgment is to be a real and actual judgment so was the judgment on the wicked world in Noah's day.

There are a number of problems presented by the assertion that the account of Noah is to be regarded as a historical narrative. None of these is unsolvable, and in any case, the question relates to the type of story written. Thus any assumption that such an event didn't or could not happen must not be read back into the intention of the author. Even though the event comes down to us today through the passage of millennia (around 4500 Years), with the actual final written form being about 3500 years old, this does not diminish the original intent or purpose which was to give an account of an actual event.

The account of Noah's Ark is a record of how God takes sin seriously, but also how He provides a way of escape for those who want it.

This account of course has no meaning at all if it either did not happen at all or did not happen as the Bible states and is thus untrue. This is partly why so many spend so much effort in trying to discredit it.

At God's direction, Noah built the Ark to preserve alive his family of eight people and representatives of all the animals, when God made it rain for 40 days and 40 nights.(Genesis 7:1-16; Luke 17:27) They spent about one year in the ark, before it came to rest in the mountains of Ararat.(Genesis 7:11, 12, 24; 8:2-6, 10, 12-14)

Genesis 6:1 - 9:17

Noah's Ark and the Flood - Story Summary:

God saw how great wickedness had become and decided to wipe mankind from the face of the earth. However, one righteous man among all the people of that time, Noah, found favor in God's eyes. With very specific instructions, God told Noah to build an ark for him and his family in preparation for a catastrophic flood that would destroy every living thing on earth.

God also instructed Noah to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, along with every kind of food to be stored as food for theanimals and his family while on the ark. Noah obeyed everything God commanded him to do.

After they entered the ark, rain fell on the earth for a period of forty days and nights. The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days, and every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out. As the waters receded, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Noah and his family continued to wait for almost eight more months while the surface of the earth dried out.

Finally after an entire year, God invited Noah to come out of the ark. Immediately, he built an altar and worshiped the Lord with burnt offerings from some of the clean animals. God was pleased with the offerings and promised never again to destroy all the living creatures as he had just done. Later God established a covenant with Noah: "Never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth." As a sign of this everlasting covenant God set a rainbow in the clouds.

A dictionary definition of the word 'ark' is a chest, or box(like the Ark of the Covenant at Exodus 25:10-16, and the ark Moses was put in as a baby at Exodus 2:1-6). Noah's Ark was basically a large chest, built by Noah and his family(under God's direction), for the purpose of floating on water. It carried eight faithful people and a large assortment of animals through the global flood brought on by God, when he destroyed the wicked 'world' of that time (Genesis 6:9-8:22/Matthew 24:37-39/Isaiah 54:9).

Was Gilgamesh the precursor to Noah?

The story of the flood in the Epic of Gilgamesh is both older than and remarkably similar to the story of Noah's Ark. It is very possible that the story of Noah's Ark came out of Gilgameshand many scholars believe that to be the case. Others believe that Gilgamesh is not actually the predecessor to the story of Noah's Ark, but that they both evolved from a common, even earlier legend.

What happened to Noah's Ark?

AnswerAccording to the Book of Genesis, Noah's Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat, where some say it remains to this day, waiting to be found. Another view is that the Story of Noah's Ark is a story of myth and legend, similar to many other even older stories in the ancient Near East.
