Answer - Winchester Model 12 in 16 Gauge . According to the (2002) Standard Catalog of Firearms (12th Edition) (See Page 1300), the Serial # 533537 falls into the production year of 1927.. The 16 Gauge is not valued as highly as other gauges, amounting to a deduction of 20% off of the other gaug…es and grades. Establishing the value of a Model 12, or any other firearm type requires more information about the version, and examination of the condition, of that individual gun.. The value of a Model 12 ranges from $200 for a Standard Grade in poor condition to Thousands of $ for the Pigeon Grade. Features such as a milled rib on the barrel garner a 40% adder to the value.. More important to valuation is market conditions. It is all against who wants what, and how much willingness to pay and accept payment exist between buyers and sellers.. Contact a reputable appraiser, such as Jim Supica, for additional information or referrals. (MORE)
Your serial number falls outside of the range to have been made before 1964 and it lacks the "Y" which would indicate that it was a custom shop manufacture. Either the serial number you provided is wrong or you have an unusual gun.
The shotgun was manufactured in 1927. The value wll depend considerably on the condition. Have it appraised by a gunsmith or collector. A gun show is one location to find a collector. If you go that route, talk to at least two.

How do you determine the age of a Winchester 101 shotgun in 12 gauge with 30' barrels and made in japan written on barrels?
When the OLIN Corp. purchased Winchester in the 1960's one of their money saving ideas was to import some firearms from Japan and put the Winchester name on them. Most of the Made in Japan Winchesters are from the 1970's.
\n. \n. \nThe gun was made around 1980. \nIt's not real collectable, but that doesn't mean it's not a good gun. \nThe gun market is so nuts right now, I won't touch a question about value. \nEverybody is scared that new democratic administration is going to slam the lid on firearms. \nPersonally…, I think they've got bigger fish to fry and unless somebody sneaks something in we're okay for now, (but that's just a guess) \nThe price of assault type weapons and most high capacity semi auto's are thru the roof. \nUnfortunately (for you) this gun doesn't fall into either of these catagories. \nThere's a whole lot of model 12's out there and everybody who's hurting for cash is trying to dump one. \nCheck out the local gun shops and gun shows and see what the asking price is in your area. \nIf you look at on line auctions, base your price on the actual selling price of the gun, not the asking price. \nEvery on-line sell is hopping for a sucker and most of those guns will be there until the ad expires. \nIf you've copied the number down correctly, the gun was made in 1939. \nThe L is actually a revision number and not part of the serial number.
\nI posted a hotlink under the "related links" heading below. \nIt's a database where you can submit the model and serial numbers and look up the date of manufacture.
