The state of Quintana Roo, Mexico sits on the eastern side of the Yucutan Peninsula. A number of Mayan ruins dot the landscape, and due to its location, resort towns/cities (ie: Cancun and Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Akumal, etc.) have grown for the last 40 or so years. It's considered one of the most heavily forested areas in the world, and has been an attraction for bird enthusiasts as many birds that migrate in the winter stop over through this area. Due to its location, the area has been prone to hurricanes.
