It does really depends on what you want to do with you chickens.
If you want eggs all the time I would go with some layers or POL (point of lay).
If you want to show get some chooks that are good for showing e.g Silkies, Polish, Frizzles. These chooks are hard to keep clean if your a beginner. Also they have to have a standard.
Then your breeding if you want to breed; anything will breed for you.
Myself I started off with layers then to Araucanas then to Frizzles (which I still have) then to Silkies. Some of them are not show quality so they're my backyard chooks.
If I were you I'd start off with the layers.
